What does a little unauthorized pawing of election night ballots matter, anyway?
That seems to be the conclusion of Elections Nova Scotia in the wake of that incident in Kings North Poll #41, when impatient Liberal scrutineer Madonna Spinazola took the ballots out of a deputy returning officer’s hands, and did her own vote count (Frank 675).

Although Jane Taber’s exclusive post-election loss interview with Darrell Dexter ran in the Monday, October 21 edition of the Globe and Mail, the piece was still the talk of the press gallery at Province House on Thursday during the swearing-in of the new crop of MLAs. 

What makes the piece so interesting, for starters, is the fact that it appeared in the Globe at all.

So, who’s allowed to touch the ballots?

According to Elections Nova Scotia, political party scrutineers are allowed to look, but not touch. 

Nonetheless, ENS found no breach of the Nova Scotia Elections Act at Kings North Poll #41 on election night after a complaint was filed that a Liberal Party scrutineer handled and counted ballots.

Mr. Premier, take back the loan

With the seat of power now firmly under his arse, Nova Scotians may wonder just which of the numerous campaign promises Premier Stephen McNeil will eagerly hop-to first.

Will it be his plan to unify the health boards into two super-boards, a cost-cutting set of all-star teams of the province’s best (or at least most senior) hospital administrators?
